NWS 980 history

NWS 980 history

In 2006, Wargaming Research and Development team was established to research and development wargaming software for a new simulator replace the old one which 30 years old wear and tear. There are 11 RTN officers lead by Capt.Surapak Dharachan Director of Wargaming division as the Project Manager and Capt.Sakorn Punmuangpak Deputy Director as the Project Secretary.

May 2006, one of R&D team found a free software open source from http://sourceforge.net/ named Global Conflict Blue (GCB) http://www.gcblue.com/ developed by Dewitt Colclough and his team under supporting by Free Software Foundation. The features of GCB similar to our requirement for new simulator then we started to studies GCB source code in deep. 5 or 6 months later, we could to change and add some own features and recompile in order to get new Wargaming Software which practical in use. We could to add RTN forced and enemy forced data into the database and created training scenarios for the Line Officer Course (Tactical level) and the Naval Command and Staff Course (Operation level).

January 9th 2007, we presented the new Wargaming Software to Vice Admiral Pairoat Kaensarn Superintendant of Instituted of Advance Naval Studies (IANS), NWS 980 Project Director. And 3 weeks later we presented to the Commander in Chief of Royal Thai Navy on January 30th 2007. After that we got the budget 4.39 M.Baht (125,000 USD) for the Naval Wargame Simulator Project. That is the first budget for our project, no budget for R&D or software. We spent this budget for only new hardware of NWS 980, computers, LAN network and accessories. We oprated NWS 980 Project by our heart for the best to our Navy.

We named the new Naval Wargame Simulator as “Naval Wargame Simulator 980” (NWS 980) because of in 2007 The King Rama 9 (His Majesty The King Phumipol Adulayadet) of Thailand will turned 80th birthday on December 5th,2007. In this year all Thai people joined celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty The King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary. That we joined the celebrations too, NWS 980. We proud to operate NWS 980 under His Majesty’s sufficiency economy philosophy.

We had been finished to build and furnish NWS 980 in September 2007 and start to use to training The Line Officer Course and Naval Command and Staff Course.

In the name of IANS we would like to say thank You to Mr. Dewitt Colclough and his team and Free Software Foundation so much. We would like to invite you to visit Thailand and NWS 980.

NWS980 : Global Conflict Blue

NWS 980 based on Global Conflict Blue.
http://freegamer.blogspot.com/2007/07/freeorion-and-global-conflict-blue.html

Intriguingly it has been adapted by the Thai Navy for training purposes although sadly they haven't made their changes availalbe to the wider public.
"เป็นสิ่งที่น่าสนใจอย่างยิ่งที่ ทร.ไทย ได้พัฒนาปรับปรุง GCB เพื่อนำมาใช้สำหรับการฝึกเฉพาะใน ทร. เอง แต่ก็น่าเศร้าที่พวกเขาไม่ได้ปล่อยสิ่งที่ได้แก้ไขออกสู่สาธารณชนในวงกว้าง"

FreeOrion and Global Conflict Blue
Global Conflict Blue
Global Conflict Blue is a:"a real-time 3D naval and air warfare simulation game similar to Fleet Command and Harpoon. The goal is a scalable single player and multiplayer game that can handle scenarios ranging from simple engagements playable in 30 minutes to massive campaigns contested over weeks.

It's only available for Windows but it's open source and a lot of it is written in Python so that can change. Intriguingly it has been adapted by the Thai Navy for training purposes although sadly they haven't made their changes availalbe to the wider public.

There's a Linux binary of FreeOrion available for download here. I'm not sure whether it's the latest stable version or latest from SVN but it should provide an opportunity for people who hadn't previously played the game to get an idea of what it is about. It is confirmed as working on an i386 Unbuntu Feisty system.

Development of FreeOrion continues at the same steady pace it has done for several years, which is promising. Some nice new graphics and features are coming. It's a well designed and well thought out game that will have a lot of depth and longevity when fully realised.

Awards

Superintendent, Institute of Advanced Naval Studies, Vice Admiral Pairoj Kaensarn got trophy for outstanding invention, NWS980, delivered by Commander-in- Chief of the Royal Thai Navy, Admiral Satirapan Keyanon.
Trophy for outstanding invention from the Royal Thai Navy
September 11, 2007

Statement from Superintendent,IANS., Vice Admiral Pairoj Kaensarn

1. GCB is used by IANS. for studying, research and development for our simulator. Now it can be used to practice war game for student officers in our different courses. We have conducted research and development for some time to assure that we can use it for practice for different war game courses. But for sure, I invite representatives from each department in the Royal Thai Navy to get suggestions and ideas for better development of NWS 980 based on GCB.
2. Our Institute (IANS.) has had two types of simulators, one is "REDIFON" and the other is "CPX" (stands for "Command Post Exercise") simulator. Both of manufacturers who produced spare-parts have closed their business for a long time. Now we have no spare-parts for both of our simulators.
3. Now our Institute cannot use REDIFON to practice the "line officers course" (for student officers whose rank are lieutenant), and cannot use CPX to practice our "Naval Command and Staff course" (Lieutenant Commander - Commander rank). So it must send them to practice at the Training Division of Royal Thai Fleet in Amphur Satahip . That of course incurs much more expense for those practices.
4. Our Institute proposed a plan to the Royal Thai Navy for buying a new simulator to replace our old simulators. But our Naval Force has no budget for this, so it seems hard to get a new simulator in the future.
5. On May 2006, our Wargaming Division discovered free software named "Global Conflict Blue" which was developed by a team led by Dewitt Colclough. We think there are no problems to modify GCB source code or just even grab it for use under the GPL license of the Free Software Foundation. From studying GCB, we found that it's appropriate for war game practice in our different courses, both tactical level and operation level. We are able to develop this project by using less than 6 million baht (200,000 us$)
6. Our institute proposed this project in the meeting of the Royal Thai Navy on last April, and Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy approved budget for this project.
7. Capabilities of GCB
7.1 surface operation
7.2 anti-submarine operation
7.3 coast guard command operation
7.4 air operation GCB also simulates sensor, weapon, logistics, and weather in realistic 3D. Also it can evaluate the result of using each weapon and is able to create more than 1000 units and 4 sides in game.

RTN Develop Naval Wargame Simulator, NWS980

This is the thing I impress the most. NWS980

I talk to the development team. They are working in the software department of Institute of Advanced Naval Studies (IANS). The head of this project, he siad at the first time RTN want to procure naval combat sinulator to train its high ranking officer. But the foreign software cost you more than 200,000,000 baht!!! So they try develop this software by themself. They uses the open source software Global Conflict Blut as a base engine. It is actually a game that you play in your home but he adjust them to suit the military task. He added the real information of warships and aircrafts. After one year of development, the outcome is like this. This is the thing I impress the most.
